  • Remains of Amoskeag Canals, frank s (guest) wrote 8 years ago:
The oldest part of the canal system that was not filled and paved over in the 1970s is actually the oldest part and pre dates the AmoskeagMFG co. Most of this work dates 40 years earlier when the town was stilled known as Derryfield. This was part of the Blodgett barge canal to afford passage up around the falls enabling goods from NH to reach south to the Boston market via the Merimack river and Middlesex canal to Cambridge. With the arrival of the railroad in the 1830s the canal quickly fell into disuse. As the Amoskeag MFG began to develop the land on the east bank of the river for water powered textile industry, the great dam was built and the original holding pond, ice weir of the original barge canal were retained as part of the gate system to control water to the power canals now vanished. Remnants of the locksare still to be seen with a keen eye. The barge canal had a series of locks south of the red gate house which are now filled over but in the 60s one could still discern granite hosing for the lock gates. In the1830s the blodgett canal, later known as the lower canal, was extended southward as a water power canal and its course lies under the present day commercial st.The Amoskeag constructed a second power canal, know as the upper canal supplied with water out of this same gate system

Same here! I live in the North Shore 3 miles from a Mitsubishi dealer and the Ma. dealers were $1800 and $2000 more.Stanley also gave me $500 more for my trade sight unseen. They delivered my new 2011 Outlader Sport to my work the free of extra charge. Bty I never set foot in the dealership, I did my shopping online. I love my new Mitsubishi!

I drove two hours to get there because they had the lowest prices anywhere. It took less than an hour to drive away in my new Lancer. Very cool.

The South Manchester rail trail goes by Nutt's Pond also. This is the first mile that is in between South Beech street and Gold street. More will be added in the future. This is part of the Concord to Salem Bikeway.
